IMPRISONED BY MY FAT BODY

I wake inside this body
That feels no longer mine,
A prison built around me
One pound at any time.

The woman in the mirror
Still looks me in the eyes,
But underneath her brave face
A frightened person cries.

I remember walking freely,
Without this heavy pain,
I long to feel that freedom
And find myself again.

My legs now feel like anchors,
My knees complain each day,
And journeys that were simple
Feel many miles away.

The chair feels like a prison,
The doorway feels too small,
And every flight of stairs now
Becomes another wall.

The world can be so cruel,
It judges what it sees,
But never feels the aching
That travels through my knees.

They do not know my story,
Or why the weight appeared,
They only see my body,
Not everything I’ve feared.

They never see me trying,
Or hear my silent plea,
They only see the outside,
Not the woman trapped in me.

I’m more than any number,
More than the clothes I wear,
There is a heart still beating,
A living woman there.

Some days I fight with courage,
Some days I sit and cry,
Some days the hill before me
Feels far too steep to try.

But I have not surrendered,
There’s fire beneath my skin,
And every little step I take
Becomes a quiet win.

I’ll loosen every binding,
One gentle day at a time,
This body may surround me,
But this brave soul is mine.

One day I’ll reach that gateway
And walk into the sun,
Not because I hated me,
But loved who I’d become.
