I used to have a little friend
That only I could see;
He told me he was just pretend,
But he was just like me.
~
He used to hide up in a tree,
The same as I would do,
And think up things that couldn’t be
And make them all come true.
~
He asked me why the sky was blue
And clouds were never still…
So many things we never knew…
And likely never will.
~
Together, we ran up a hill
And rolled the other side;
We shared the fun of ev’ry thrill
And faced our fears in stride.
~
Oh, how we jumbled on the ride
That speeded high and low,
And left our tracings on the slide,
Where none would ever know.
~
My trusty friend and I would go
Out in the woods to play;
And in the mid of summer’s glow,
He let me fade away.
~
The bonds of youth do often fray,
And ev’ry thing must end.
If you become a child some day,
I’d like to be your friend.
