"Pick one," they say
"Choose now."
"Why that one?"
"You're more this than you are that."
"Wait."
"No."
"Stay there,
a little to the right."
"Okay, now I see what you mean."
"Pick One," they say
"Choose wisely."
"Don't you want to be good."
"Are you good?"
"Wait."
"No."
"Stop there."
"Don't speak just yet."
"I'm still deciding whether you're good enough."
"Pick one," they say
"Listen to this song."
"Wait."
"Are you serious?"
Unknown Artist
"You've never heard this?"
"You cannot possibly be like me."
"Pick one," they say.
"Either you're this, or you're that."
"Wait."
"No."
"You don't get to decide."
Pause. Breathe.
"I still need time,
Go wait in between."
"Pick one," they say
But do they mean what they say?
Wait.
No.
What's their benefit?
Stop. Think.
I'm deciding my place.
Determining my identity.
"Pick one," they say
But it's never my choice,
Right?
When?
Now?
Really?
"Not just yet."
"We're still deciding."
"Someday soon, we promise."
"Pick one."
About the Creator
Jasmine Turner
I found myself in writing. Reading others stories, realizing I had one to tell as well. I know that writing is my peace, my safe space, the place I return to day after day to have those uncomfortable conversations with myself. Welcome.
