I Wonder
An old poem sitting unread on an old laptop

I wonder how many frowns sit under kind smiles
And how many tears are held behind bright eyes
I wonder how many are drowning behind each gentle breath
And how many, for show, put on a happy facade
I wonder how many cries are masked by laughs
And how many only speak to fill the deafening silence
I wonder how many respond "good" when really, they're not
And how many, surrounded by people, still feel so alone
I wonder how many think their pain goes unnoticed
And how many have altogether gone numb
But mostly, I wonder how many hear "I love you"
And how many truly believe it
