I should’ve said “I love you”

A villanelle about letting true love slip through my fingers

By Cat the AutistPublished 10 months ago 1 min read

I should’ve said “ I love you”

On the day that we first met

Instead of “how do you do”.

What was I supposed to do

When my future wasn’t set

With a special spot for you?

Flash forward not one, but two

Years later, and I have yet

To share my feelings for you.

At long last, my heart was wooed

By a man whose eyes were set

On me, but it wasn’t you.

This man spent not one, but two

Years filling my life with regret.

I wish it never came true.

I should’ve said that I love you.

You could be my safety net

Saving me out of the blue.

My confession’s overdue.
