I SEEN THE MOON IN A JAM JAR
What’s delight it was to see

I SEEN THE MOON IN A JAM JAR
I seen the moon in a jam jar,
Upon an old market stall,
It wasn’t very big that night,
It wasn’t round at all.
A woman with a crooked smile,
Said, “Take it home with you,
It shines upon the broken hearts,
And makes them feel brand new.”
I paid her with a silver coin,
And wrapped it in my shawl,
But every star came following,
Like children down the hall.
I placed the jar beside my bed,
And watched the moonlight grow,
It showed me things I had forgot,
From many years ago.
I seen my mother young again,
With flowers in her hair,
I reached my hand towards her face,
But she was never there.
I seen the girl I used to be,
Before the world turned cold,
Her eyes were full of wonderment,
Her heart had not grown old.
The little moon began to cry,
Its tears ran down the glass,
It whispered, “You must let me go,
You cannot hold the past.”
I opened up the window wide,
The stars began to sing,
The moon escaped the old jam jar,
And grew to everything.
Now when I feel my heart is lost,
And darkness fills my room,
I look above the chimney pots,
And there I see my moon.
For nothing loved is ever gone,
Though we may be apart,
Some moons belong up in the sky,
And some live in the heart.
