I Remember You

Our memories are still alive and well

Loss and grief are extremely tough times and you feel like you are emotionally all over the shop. At first it is all encompassing, then slowly you begin to heal and life will have moments of normality.

The periods of normality begin increasing but you will be continually shocked back into your pain. When you do start smiling again or start to look forward to tomorrow, guilt will raise its head. You will feel that it is not okay to be happy.

I would like to tell you that it is perfectly okay to be happy.

I wake in the morning

Stretching out lazily,

It’s a fresh new day

Let’s start it happily.

***

Then I remember you.

***

I move about my day

Through the motion,

Of day to day living

I’m no longer broken.

***

Then I remember you.

***

At the end of the day

I lie in bed dreaming,

Thinking about life

My smile is beaming.

***

Then I remember you.

***

My mood rises and falls

With my thoughts,

Happy day to day

Generally on course.

***

Then I remember you.

***

I am totally fine, until

You enter my mind.

I brush you aside

But you refuse to hide.

***

Then I remember you.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
