I heard your subtle hints of the end
I chose to ignore because it was easier to pretend,
That you were okay,
That the sickness would go away
I remember you held my hand and said “Please let me go.”
I shook my head, unaccepting, then I whispered, “No.”
I mourn for you today. I’ll mourn for you tomorrow,
And all the years that follow.
Though I felt you slipping away,
I cried and prayed that you would stay,
Your smiles, your hugs meant the world to me,
I love you so much, my beautiful, sweet and feisty granny.
You held my hand through storms unknown,
through quiet battles others weren’t shown.
I often think of the times you held me tight,
The time you hugged me the entire night,
I felt safe, a warmth that still lingers,
Like the time you gave me comfort when I smashed my fingers,
Without you here, nothing is the same,
It’s too hard for me to even hear your name,
Without a tear falling from my grieving eyes,
Filling every room with silent cries,
I mourn for you today. I’ll mourn for you tomorrow,
And all the years that follow.
Remembering the good times we shared,
The times you hugged me when I was scared.
I can’t write all that’s in my heart today,
but please know, it’s too hard to say goodbye to yesterday.
I love you. I miss you, my beautiful, sweet granny.
