I'm Fine. Thanks For Asking

A Satire on Wellness Culture

The doctor smiles at the chart, and the chart smiles back. Numbers live in neat little boxes, while I live in a body that negotiates with gravity.

Friends ask if I've tried drinking more water, sleeping more, sleeping less, walking, not walking, thinking positively, or purchasing the correct flavor of expensive optimism.

I'm fine, thanks for asking.

It's a useful phrase. Compact. Portable. Easy to carry when carrying everything else already hurts.

The wellness influencers rise at dawn, blending powders harvested from mountains no one can pronounce. They speak of healing journeys while standing on beaches my insurance doesn't cover.

Meanwhile, my greatest achievement this week was unloading the dishwasher without scheduling a recovery period.

I'm fine, thanks for asking.

Now it means: Please don't make me explain. Please don't ask why I canceled again. Please don't tell me about your cousin who cured everything with celery and determination.

The mind keeps score when the body keeps changing the rules.

One symptom becomes three. Three become ten. Ten become a late-night search history that reads like a thriller novel written by a malfunctioning pharmacist.

Every ache arrives with a small question attached: What if this is permanent?

Every good day arrives with another: How long do I have?

I'm fine, thanks for asking.

Now it means: I am exhausted. Not the charming kind of tired that disappears after a vacation. The kind that settles into the furniture, learns my schedule, and starts collecting mail.

People celebrate resilience because they rarely have to witness it.

They applaud strength without seeing the invoices, the medications, the appointments, the bargaining, the quiet grief of becoming fluent in limitations.

So yes, I smile. I nod. I reassure everyone that things are under control.

I'm fine, thanks for asking.

And now it means: I survived today. Not triumph. Not victory... Not some inspirational lesson for a motivational poster. Just survival.

And tomorrow, if someone asks how I'm doing... I'll probably say again...

I'm fine... Thanks for asking.

But this time, we'll both know it's carrying the weight of everything I didn't say.
