I never held a silver spoon in hand

But white bread churches taught me to be pure

When I rejected that old crimson brand

My want of purpose found me so unsure

Of where to steer my nascent rainbow ship

The green and gurgled mere of malcontents

Which surged their cream foam wavy ways that drip

With luscious gilt and vapid vain intent

Toward a blue and pink besparkled shore

Could not with all their yellowed lace and pomp

Direct my course to land upon that lore

Forever to perform a by rote romp

Instead I hove my sail to wilder winds

That whistled titillating tunes of hues

Beyond the bylaws my own truth rescinds

Unwilling as I was to pay the dues

And pledge to flags whose colours were not mine

There must be purpose in the yellow sky

Amid the gray and grinding time turbine

The hurricane of haunts all howling why?

Why not accept a simple rest at peace

Outside this strident strife you struggle through

In search of truth as rare as golden fleece?

Although I often sailed without a crew

And black despair took tea with me at times

I traveled on without a port o’ call

Determined to endure the trying climes

Until upon my nameless shore I fall

For all the colours gather names and tribes

Of those I love but don’t identify

Vivaciously with my voracious vibes

And limit them with labels I defy

From sea to sea I sought my colour out

Not matte or glossy worked out well for me

The orange sunset sank before my doubt

And cast in silhouette a mockery

Then of a sudden one last gleaming beam

Exploded through the firmament above

A violet I never thought to dream

And showed me I’m the colour that I love

I pledge to me and my own flag I fly

I’m finding purpose under purple skies

Amid the churning storms of hate I try

To help the hurt and ask the monsters why?
