I Knew I Was Yours

A love poem

Our eyes met and I knew I was yours

At least in part

Never had I known you

But I'd felt you in my heart

You were cleansing rain

And ocean breeze

You were summer sunlight

Dappled through the trees

You were whispered nothings

Given to inspire hope

You were love and laughter

Crashing toward me on steepest slopes

You were a piece of me gone missing

That I could not describe

Until I saw you

And I felt so much better than alive

You were light in impenetrable darkness

So bright you defied the stars

You were an angel special sent

To help me heal my scars

I remembered then

That you wouldn't know my heart

Not like I already knew yours

And I felt entirely too much sorrow at the thought

But I knew it didn't matter

Because I'd make it a point to get to know you

So I could fall deeper in love every day

And so maybe you could love me too
