I Guess We Will Never Know

Everyone has a hidden story

On a quiet corner on the outskirts of town

Sits a man with a crumpled brow

How he got it and where from,

We will probably never know

Every day he just appears

Sits down by the road

What haunts him most

Curses every part of his soul

When people judge him

Before they really know.

He has loved before

So many times

But each time they let him go

He bore the scars and sacrificed the love

Took his broken heart

And moved on down the road

But no one cares, and no one knows

Just exactly where he’s been

What sort of life has he endured

We will never really know.

Occasionally, he lifts his head

To look at passersby

With his soulful eyes of emerald green

His sadness starts to show

You can see that he has suffered

In some condescending way

He doesn’t beg, he doesn’t plead

He just rocks back and forth

Patting his tiny dog

What he is thinking we will never know.

He knows his life will never change

He accepts what he has got

Grateful that he has one friend

His furry little guy

As the sun begins to fall

I wonder where he will go?

A house of cardboard boxes

Or a park bench to call his own

Does he have food for them to eat?

I guess we will never know.

As I stare, his head is bent, looking at the ground

He feels my vision that is fixated on him

And his head begins to rise

I look into those deep green eyes

He smiles with the warmth of a fire

I walk up to this mortal man

And give him a hundred-dollar bill

God bless you, man, and your little dog

Maybe tonight you can sleep and eat well

That much I now know.

Till next time,

Calvin
