I Can’t Be Sad My Life Is Too Happy

Everyone tells me how lucky I am

Beautiful house and a neat little plan

Photos all smiling in polished frames

A life most people would envy by name

So why does the darkness still crawl through my head

Why do I struggle to climb from my bed

Guilt wraps around me whenever I cry

I can’t be sad with this wonderful life

The garden still blooms beyond kitchen glass

Children keep laughing while warm days pass

Friends say they wish they had all that I own

Never once seeing how empty I’ve grown

Depression cares little for comfort or gold

It settles in quietly icy and cold

Turning soft mornings unbearably long

Making familiar places feel wrong

I learned how to fake every smile on cue

Mastered pretending the way people do

Nodding and laughing at all of the right parts

While carrying storms through the pit of my heart

I can’t be sad, that is what they imply

As though pain needs permission to survive

Yet sorrow appears without reason or sign

Even in lives that seem perfectly fine

Perhaps one day people finally will see

The cruel hidden weight of invisible grief

Until then I carry this silence alone

Smiling outside while breaking at home
