Hurricane Stanley

A villanelle commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Carolina Hurricanes' 1st Stanley Cup

By Clyde E. DawkinsPublished 3 months ago 1 min read

In Raleigh, the storm broke fierce and true,

A hurricane of red swept through the night.

The Cup was raised where Southern ice once grew.

From Ward’s quick glove to the cannon of Cole,

The Canes defied the odds with heart and fight.

In Raleigh, the storm broke fierce and true.

Brind’Amour led with fire, steady and bold,

Staal and Williams carved through the winter’s bite.

The Cup was raised where Southern ice once grew.

Against the Oilers, in Game Seven’s glow,

A shorthanded goal sealed Edmonton’s plight.

In Raleigh, the storm broke fierce and true.

The RBC Center shook with a thunderous roar,

Confetti fell like snow in the victory light.

The Cup was raised where Southern ice once grew.

Now legends wear the scars of battles won,

A franchise born again in red and white.

In Raleigh, the storm broke fierce and true

The Cup was raised where Southern ice once grew
