Howling Wolves Incoming

A poem for Halloween Prompt

Somewhere in a distant dream, a heart still beats,

stuck in a frozen body,

stiff and weakened from sleep.

Falling into the depths that nullify any movement.

And for a moment, the silence comforts every mended crack of the home.

If I ever hear the sound of cracking bones, please let me be stronger than the still version I saw.

The one that couldn’t spring up for you,

Even though I wanted to.

The dream tearing every nerve that said I would move for you.

Going against every word that I confidently said to you.

Why would my mind show me the one thing I never wanted in any dream?

To be a protector.

For you and the stillness I crafted.

Please, if I ever hear the sound of howling wolves, let me act fast before the glass could ever crash.

Please let me be the one to uphold the shards flying, to not let the wolves

Invade this callow home, I dreamed for simple lives.

What were you trying to tell me by making me hear the screams?

The pleads and cries, begging for help

And the cracking bones of a loved one

I can never erase from my mind.

No matter if I consciously change the dream itself.

Stuck in a bed as the cries get louder,

the house heavy at the fact I couldn’t bring myself to leave the place that was supposed to make me stronger.

Even though the sun was still shining outside my window.

A place that was supposed to see the crash coming, where I told myself I would do more for you.

Why?

Why couldn’t I change the dream that still ran like life?

Forced to confront the fact that my dream showcased some reality.
