How to Save a Life

From a nightmare to a dream

By Molly BakerPublished 5 years ago • 1 min read

3 years wasted

Scared to be alone, yet scared to be trapped

An unsound addiction, but not just of mine

He was addicted to keeping my last dollar wrapped

Around his toxic finger to feed his mental hunger.

"Sad" doesn't even begin to describe this.

All this entangled with mom's cancer, losing pets

And nowhere safe to clear my thoughts and cry about it.

Returning to college I thought wasn't worth my time

Until a man walked in and caught my eye

I caught myself smiling authentically for the first time in forever

But all I could do was turn away and only comply

With that comfortable pain I was afraid to succumb.

So naturally, being loyal, I did nothing but dream

About a new life that someone like me only saw in their imagination.

The following days, I wanted to scream

But my mental hollowness overpowered my strength

Until the day I no longer accepted breaking down endlessly.

I finally broke free and that pain turned into blissfulness

Crying tears of joy thanking God on my knees.

Although, I had one last desire before I really felt content.

It was a risk, but I took a chance.

I started reminiscing about the man that really made me smile

Because all I wanted, no, needed was some real romance.

Fast forward a fortnight later,

We fell in love so swiftly.

Four months later, my fairy-tale ending was only the beginning.

And she lived ever after so happily.
