How to Get Through the Night

a short poem

In ink an illustration of a dark night with leafless trees and a figure lurking.

Draw your curtains, don’t peek out —

for they won’t care for you

if you don’t reach for their eyes.

.

Don’t whistle down the wind

after the sun has set.

Don’t call for them with:

idle tongue

intent unintentional.

They will come

when all you wanted

was simple tune as company.

.

Keep knobs locked, doors bolted.

The hostile guest will see

the turning knob

as invitation to a beheading.
