How Men Are Taught to Process Emotion

a brief poem

By Gabriel HuizengaPublished 2 months ago • 1 min read

And I don't know why

I cried at the thought

of saying goodbye

to an old brown rug.

But I did -

so it sits now

rolled up in the basement

beside my unexplained feelings.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

This was originally a brief excerpt of a longer poem - but I read this clip of it and felt that this carried the heart of the piece by itself. I may publish the whole piece later at some point, too, if it feels right! Also, I would like to say that I fully believe all men are 100% responsible for processing our own emotions and doing the work of learning how to navigate our internal worlds more healthily; I just titled the piece as it is now because I realized, in breaking down my feelings, what a poignant image this scene makes for how so many of us were trained (intentionally or not, on individual and societal levels) to just stuff things down. Anyhow, I hope it speaks to you! Thank you, kindly, for stopping by and reading my work. Hope you are well, friend.
