How Could You?

Everything felt different when I walked in this mornin’.

I knew something was wrong

Then I spotted an earring that I knew didn’t belong.

Took a deep breath, knew I had to be strong.

.

Did you forget about the Ring cams that you put in last fall?

I never thought I’d find a video of you and her kissin’.

Bet ya never thought it’d capture you and your downfall.

You were so worried about those packages that went missin’.

Now you’ll be lucky if yours isn’t the next to next to go.

I may toss it in the river, use it to go fishin’.

.

I asked you about the earring,

My eyes and heart were already tearing.

You took me by the hand,

Looked deep into my eyes

And said, “I hope you’ll understand…”

.

Baby, how could I?

When you said, “All I’ve ever really wanted is to be your man.”

So, no.

No, no, no.

No, I don’t understand.

You can take these rings,

Go pack up all your things.

How could you?

.

Tell me, ‘How could you

Hold her in your arms

And say I never left your heart?

How could you

Kiss her lips, peel away her lace,

Lay her down, right here in our place?

How could you?

How could you?

.

Then you looked me in the eyes and lied to my face?

You know that I know!

How could you do what you’ve done,

Take her here and have your fun?

Do you still need to ask if you and I are through?

How could you?

How could you?

.

I was so certain of our love.

So sure it was steady,

When you asked me for my hand,

Boy, I was ready.

I never thought you’d break my heart.

Cheat, lie, or deceive me.

So, now you’d better tell me…

How could you?

How could you?

.

Yeah, you said that you were drunk

That you didn’t know what you were doin’,

Well, I’m sober as hell, and I’ll tell ya right now:

If you know what’s good for you

You’d better get movin’.

There’s no turning back.

There’s no way of undoin’.

You say that you love me,

Well, that’s not what this is provin’!

.

How could you do all that you were doin’

After all these years, all the promises we’ve made?

Was it really worth it?

Did you realize the trade?

Well, if you didn’t, you should know that it’s way too late

’Cause this is the bed that you’ve made.

The vows you swore were nothin’ but a myth.

Boy, you’d best believe we’re over and done with.

.

You won’t drown out our memories by tipping back another fifth.

Sure hope it was worth it for the one ya cheated with.

You kissed our future goodbye when your lips touched hers.

Now, I know you’ll keep drinkin’ until your memory blurs,

But you can never undo

All these memories of ours.

How could you?

How could you?

.

Tell me, ‘How could you

Hold her in your arms

And say I never left your heart?

How could you

Kiss her lips and peel away her lace,

Lay her down, right here in our place?

How could you?

.

Then you looked me in the eyes and lied to my face?

You know that I know!

How could you do what you’ve done,

Take her here and have your fun?

Do you still need to ask if you and I are through?

How could you?

How could you?

.

I was so certain of our love.

So sure it was steady,

When you asked me for my hand,

Boy, I was ready.

I never thought you’d break my heart.

Cheat, lie, or deceive me.

So, now you’d better tell me…

How could you?

How could you?

. . .
