Dancing under boughs of flamboyant death
I try to tap dance my way in there
Covering my home in frightful kitsch
Like a ticket to some macabre affair
-
I stand outside the thinning veil
Imagine the spirited party on the other side
The luminaries I might speak to
Whose secrets, in me, they might confide
-
A false desire to see my life in relief
Same as safety makes a horror show fun
I did not understand the House of October
Until Death made me her plus one
-
A voice from across the ether sent word
A friend had died, and he was no Lazarus
But the signal must have been mixed because
Our friendship had long been cadaverous
-
Then a ghost from a past life called out
A wandering spirit, how could he not know?
His message from another time is wasted
I exorcised him a long time ago
-
Looking through October’s curtains
I see giddy spring gone home to rest
The heart of summer burning out
And winter’s frost, an unwelcome guest
-
In October’s house of the falling
I hug the walls of this moulding manse
As Death spins her partners into the dirt
I await her hand, and my final dance
