Going home after lockdown

The pavement has gone

There are no more streets, or cars or houses

There is only dirt, and gravel and tree roots beneath my feet

My feet cry out in relief

My heart pounding as I climb up and up and up

My legs hurting, tired and undertrained

My heart pumping so loud I hear it inside my ears

The blood rushing around so hard I can feel it moving

I reach the summit and rest on a rock, gasping for air

I smell the gums

I hear the birds sing

The trickle of a creek gurgles beside me

I feel the gentle breeze, hear it rustle the leaves above me.

I look up

The trees reach their trunks to the heavens above me

Their branches reaching out to stroke and comfort each other

I lay back, the air having filled my lungs

I am home
