A poem for the forgotten old

What happened?

You were a good man.

You built a career

A life

A family

A home

How did you end up here?

This isn't your home.

Your home had photos

Had laughter

Had affection

Had love

Who put you in this

Cold, dispassionate room?

Surrounded by strange pictures

Strange smells

Strange sounds

Strange faces

When did you stop being human -

Seen only as an old thing?

Discarded like an odd sock

An expired coupon

A rusted nail

A bad idea.

You are so much more

Than a thing unneeded.

You are a vessel of wisdom

Knowledge

Experience

Life

You deserve better.
