Home is where the family is
America the land of the free where my family refound me
Home is where the stars shine bright
for it was the start of your life
not worried about anything outside
free from all the lies
where the bald eagle flies
always having a bright side
where you can rest and find
your family once again
sharing a meal with them
instead of trying to make a deal with them
they'll always keep it real
and tell you how they feel
through optimisim, away from skeptisism
listening to the national anthem
every now and then
friendly family banter
under the star-spangled banner
because we are all free
enjoying ourselves with glee
our family brings happiness and bliss
reconnecting after all we have missed
throughout our daily lives
showing eachother once again
we will always be there for one another
our many brothers and sisters
who married different wives and misters
the home holds us all up
for it is our foundation
living inside this sacred nation

B. A. Durham’s False Memories blends dream and reality in a seamless mix. As his father, afflicted by Alzheimer’s, fades away, the narrator is haunted by a dream that may be a memory, returning to him insistently. The piece is full of wonderful detail (the father touching his lip where once there was a mustache, “but now he is clean-shaven—he has been for years” — and moving in revealing the complexities of a family’s life. A worthy winner which shows the power of dreams to influence us.
