He galumphs on stage engulfed

In a brass cloud of sound

His diamond hands flash

To the steady beat of

Awe wrenching melodies

With bird eye exactness

He scans the audience

*

His music enslaves their

Bleating hearts mistaking a

Glossy stage presence for

Their untarnished American son

They have no will against this

Aberration -- they are lost

*

He sings to the lonely

Unleashing their impotence

With transfixed palsy

If only his meritorious effort

We're tasteful or genuine

Instead of spurious paste

*

When he comes to town

The regular musicians send in subs

To play his mirey songs

But the audience is his

He has won

They belong to him

*

Their somnambulistic pontiff

They honor him

Bow to his glitz

To his pompadour

To his plinth of power

To his Wayne Newton-ness
