From the Remains of One Holiday is Born Another

When the candles in the pumpkins have melted

And the gourds themselves have rotted

And the candy wrappers have been tossed aside

And the glow sticks long forgotten

The skeletons have returned to the ground

And the demons no longer dwell

Ghosts and ghouls have stopped their haunts

And black cats have lost their threat

When all the death and decay have gone away

And all the cheer and fun has gone by, too

A new life springs from the decomposition

New holidays form from the remains of another—

Bright lights overtake the shadows

Santa takes place of the skeletons

From rotten gourds sprout evergreens

All aglow in their mighty decorations

Snow chases tricolored leaves

Racing them to the damp ground

And laughter fills the air once more

As people young and old celebrate

Holidays from around the world

And from all the world’s religions

And say farewell to Halloween

As life continues to cycle
