Holes in the Sky

from a prompt to write about the starry sky

The sky is black wool
stretched tight
over the world.

Stars puncture it—
tiny holes,
I can’t stop looking through.

A constellation
is only a pattern
of things that stayed.

Most nights,
I focus on what’s missing
more than what remains.

But light pushes through.

It presses against
every place
the dark has settled.

I stand beneath
thinking of the woman
I promised myself
I would become.

Some promises
went silent.

Some
keep shining.
