Hidden Spaces
From a Child Whose Parent Struggles With a Mental Disorder (BPD)
And it is where I found you
The most confusing game of hide and seek
Covering my eyes from the harsh reality only to open them and see that it is much worse than I could have imagined
Stuck in the hidden spaces of your own mind
It's like the most sinister maze
Every path dark, a flickering street light here and there
In every corner sat a shadow of who you were once upon a time
Or who I thought you were
I walked along the murky trail of who you had become
Indifference and nonchalance holding each hand
Letting me know that they will always be here to protect me
Those two are dangerous, you know?
Because what is worse than showing anger, sadness, or grief?
Showing nothing at all
But it was needed because emotions are your specialty
Bending my will to support your cause
"Come on. We're going home." I say to you
The tiniest bit of hope in my voice
I pray you didn't catch it
Hope is the most powerful emotion of all
And as we walk out of that maze you say to me
"I have something to show you. I've slew that evil dragon."
Your arms stretched out, your palms up
Cuts on your wrists, pills in your hand, the smell of gunpowder fills my nostrils
A gunshot wound on the side of your stomach
You're smiling with pride
I look into your eyes wondering
'Were you trying to kill yourself or the hypothetical Mr. Hyde that, through a brain imbalance and possible childhood trauma, had been born and had taken over?'
Invasion of the body snatcher
Or should I say brain snatcher
With a kiss on my cheek and a wink of your eye off you run back into that maze
Back into those hidden spaces
That confusing game of hide and seek
Your episodes on automatic play asking if I'm still watching
Unfortunately, yes.
With the volume low and my ears plugged because fear is loud
