Help Me To Breathe

Each breath is a battle I never win,

lungs like paper, caving in.

The world moves, but I stay still,

trapped in my body that won’t bend to will.

Air slips through like sand in a sieve,

a slow starvation, forced to live.

Every step, a dragging weight,

every night, the lungs debate—

Will they work? Will they quit?

Will this be the worst of it?

A cough, a gasp, a hollow chest,

a waking body begging rest.

No cure, no break, no way out,

just shrinking walls of fear and doubt.

No running, no climb, no second chance,

just slow collapse, just circumstance.

Strangled by a thief, relentless and cold,

this COPD whispers lies, a grip so bold.

Yet in each fleeting breath, I chase the night,

yearning for freedom, for the chance to fight.

The chance dear god to breathe and to live.
