Challenge prompt: Write a satirical poem that repeats one line at least three times. Each time it appears, its meaning should shift or deepen.

I said, impotence, you have heard me say that before.

I started talking to groups about that at age thirty-four.

Too much drinking and diabetes contribute to it

I worked with alcoholics and thought this shit

would be important for some to hear

before they go back to drinking their beer

~

Too much drinking and diabetes contribute to it

Other things too, but this served the purpose to git

my guys to take a look at what drinking does

to them, and to you. When working with men cause

it was detox, and a men's halfway house, chronic

conditions they needed to hear this as they were sick

~

Alcoholism is a disease and some are sicker than others

I told many this and even my brothers.

Too much drinking and diabetes contribute to it

I heard regularly, "Don't tell me that shit!"

~

Then I said, and it's best to stay out of a relationship

for a year some say, and I say even two years

"F--- you, you do that! I know it's a hardship.

You will be all healed up from your feet to your ears.

~

I was married when I got into recovery, Dear!

"Well, I will tell you what, I will leave here

get married and I will be back!"

The laughter was on! I heard sad sack

given to the guy who talked smack.

~

My boss at the time has become a friend

She started working there again

She will be there until her end

She is eighty. She said, "Those men

don't hear that talk anymore, no one

gives that talk anywhere, to anyone

~

It was never difficult for me, but I see

how it can be difficult for others, unlike me.

Over my years, diabetes gets taken care of

and the drinking stops and a return to love

~

Impotence:

Sometimes there is simply innocence

Too much drinking and diabetes contribute to it

Really, No shit!
