He Drank
Until He Was Empty
He drank until he was empty
And the blackness became a peaceful void
Passed out in permanent slumber
His soul extravagantly released his delusions of love
A place where loneliness and despair
Are nothing but mere thoughts
Simply self-defined concepts
Of who he was not
Denying his truth
It was all an illusion
Based on the expectations of others
He buried himself under
A liquid cloak of nothingness
He drank until he was empty
Until he fell in the blackness
And the blackness became a peaceful void

I have written a number of poems about alcoholism. My husband (deceased) fought his demons diligently, and my daughter is still in the throes of denial. I am afraid I will outlive her.
Excellent job depicting addiction. I hope more people get to read your poem.
‘And the blackness became a peaceful void.’ I too have loved a person. My best friend. An alcoholic and yet from her son’s diagnosis through his death she reformed for his healing. Unti his passing. 5 years later we lost her as well. This is my perspective on that time of her role as a mother. I didn’t know then I had Bipolar 1 and Complex PTSD Only if you you have time Pauline 🌸 https://vocal.media/poets/interplay Read less
So eloquent, well done
That is heartbreaking, but beautifully written.
You captured the pain of addiction so well.
