He Cannot Fight the Darkness

From "Impressions of He"

In the tenebre around me

A weary frame lies still

Cold vespers die upon his lips

Once unpropelled by will;

His resting face is strained

And a glove defends his eyes

From the callous and the caring

From the hope or from the lies;

Melting into the framework

Succumbing to the night

His body fades to blackness

But his sleeping face spreads light;

For though he cannot fight the darkness

Everywhere he finds

He still can touch one heart

And he can light one mind.
