Handsome Usurper

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 5 months ago • 1 min read
"Faded Laurels" by Edmund Blair Leighton,1889.

Not long ago, I held them all spellbound

My voice was sonorous and hypnotic

To problems with rhyme and meter, I found

Simple solutions that seemed heroic

The king and queen found delight in my songs

Fair lasses with bright smiles followed me home

My name was whispered with awe by the throngs

My reputation spread as far as Rome

Of late, a handsome stranger has appeared

His tales exciting, his voice young and strong

No longer are my trusted skills revered

In my accustomed place, I don't belong

Like grey hairs in my beard, woes multiply

My music fades, and I am left to die

Ekphrastic
