Hand in Hand

A poem about codependency

Love, infatuation, attraction

White knuckles grip on so hard, so desperately

begging them not to leave

"Love me,

save me,

fix me!"

they plead

and they fall on their knees

"Please, I need you"

Words have never gifted a bigger burden

So many broken hearts yearn for another to make them whole

"My prince is going to save me!"

"My girl will brighten my world!"

Then when

Love doesn't want to raise you

Love doesn't want to listen and not be heard

Love doesn't want to be your punching bag

Love doesn't want to spend their free time fixing your problems

Love doesn't want to be your crutch

Love doesn't want you to die if they leave

Love doesn't want to give give give

and never receive

You think love is a lie

Love wants to hold you when you cry,

even if it takes all night

But love isn't perfect

Love cries too

Love needs someone to hold them.

You were given a hand that fits perfectly in another

but you were given two hands so that when no-one else can fill the gaps

You can hold your own.

No-one wants to be used.

You won't let go of the knife until you decided to

Be someone's treasure

not their charity project

How can you expect someone to love you if you don't love yourself?

How can you expect them to want to help change what they love?

How can you expect them to be around constant emotional instability?

Some will

Most won't.

Don't run around grabbing for relationships like candy

Work on yourself because love

comes when you least expect it.

Don't need it

treasure it

You shouldn't make life about love

Love should be the cherry on top

Love is fragile

It will crumble at the base

because life is too much weight

If love is true,

take a step back

because love can't handle the weight of your life on their shoulders.

Love will stay.

Love will go.

And if love lets go of your hand

you need to be able to hold it yourself.
