Halloween Approaches

Halloween approaches, the dead are awake,

There's something been stirring beneath the old lake,

The trees have been whispering terrible things,

And something is flying with blood on its wings.

The graveyard is moving, the headstones all shake,

The dead have been summoned, their coffins now break,

A woman in black with no eyes in her head,

Is calling the names of the recently dead.

A child at the window with fingers of bone,

Keeps asking the people to let him come home,

His mother is buried beneath the old tree,

But every October he comes looking for tea.

The church bells are ringing, although there's no rope,

A priest in the graveyard has given up hope,

His Bible is burning, his prayers have gone cold,

For something has risen that's centuries old.

The pumpkins are screaming, their faces have changed,

The scarecrows are dancing, their bodies deranged,

A witch with three tongues and a mouth full of teeth,

Is dragging a coffin along the high street.

The moon has gone missing, the stars have turned red,

A horse without legs carries someone who's dead,

The windows are bleeding, the doorways all cry,

And hundreds of blackbirds fall out of the sky.

A man with no shadow comes knocking at doors,

His footsteps leave ashes and blood on the floors,

He asks for a candle, a needle, some thread,

To stitch up the faces he's stolen from the dead.

The children have vanished, their sweets left behind,

A terrible laughter is haunting the mind,

Their costumes are hanging from branches of trees,

While something invisible crawls on its knees.

At midnight the cemetery opens its gate,

The living are summoned to meet with their fate,

A thousand dead voices begin their last song,

And anyone listening must follow along.

Halloween approaches, so lock up your door,

Don't answer the knocking or look at the floor,

For something is waiting beneath where you sleep,

And tonight it has promised your soul it will keep.
