Grief has no expiration date

Memories that bring tears can come at any time.

This poem is dedicated to the memory of Michael Lynn Preston Sr. (July 4, 1957-March 21, 2021).

I cut my finger on a knife

Forgot I was no longer a wife

I smiled and called my husband's name

He did not answer and never came

He’s been gone for four and a half years

I still have days when I shed many tears

The sight of blood made him look away

Call one of the children, he would always say

Each time I cut my finger

I laughed because he would not linger

Today, my mishap with a knife

Reminded me I’m no longer his wife

It felt like the blood ran from my heart

Reminding me that death tore us apart

Those who are widowed can never predict

Which memories return, and which ones will stick
