Greeting Card Culture

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

A bouquet of benign, boring bromides

Fact checked, focus grouped, carefully filtered

Suitable for all: brides to suicides

Meant to charm you, or leave you bewildered

Born of busy bots, no real mind bothered

Set to be signed, sealed, delivered, displayed

On high holy days, happily gathered

On disastrous days, suitably dismayed

Smooth and insincere, they offend no one

Expressing nothing, they cause no dispute

The safety's always on; they're just for fun

At once, articulate and oddly mute

Made by machines, they teach us not to feel

Or think or write a thing awkwardly real

Ekphrastic
