Stay with me, why don’t you

Stay with me, I want to hold

Your hand and be in time with your heartbeat

I love your eyes

Because they see me differently

To the cruel, wicked mirrors

That have become my enemies

Now that someone is aware of me…

We could have eternity in this moment

Before the rain spits

Before the timer on the oven goes off

And we need to fix our diverging spins and spirals

Maybe make them into icing

Florals designed to be sickly sweet

I prefer bitterness

Because it lets the taste linger

And reveals our imperfections

Our leaves just misaligned

Still stretching for the sun, still warming from shyness

Lemon does not go with sugar,

Lemonade is too hard to get perfect.

There will always be a bit of rind that gets through the sieve

And that’s just us - the rind that no one realises

Is the difference between sweet and sour

The space between every word in a green poem

And the healing in every new day

Oh, why don’t you just breathe here,

Breathe here, and stay with me

While I hope this play isn’t a tragedy.
