Graceless

Lost once—lost forever

Your fist, my wrist, a bond too frail to last

Now broken from the sheets where we confessed—

That time was always meant to be the last.

My tears upon your arms fell to my hands,

And parted lips took pause before your chest—

That time was always meant to be the last.

Your hand outstretched, then drawn back just as fast,

Our words fell flat into a dead caress—

That time was always meant to be the last.

Our epitaph ran through my heart aghast

"I'm sorry," "Leave me," "This is for the best—"

That time was always meant to be the last.

I see myself, a true iconoclast,

A yearning sinner hollowed since you left.

That time was always meant to be the last.

My window for redemption came and passed

And grace will never be at my behest.

The lesson I know now from heartache past:

That time was always meant to be the last.
