Goodbye

Am I going blind or is my vision blurred from watery eyes

I’m not sure if this is the truth or a lie

This isn’t an easy matter to contemplate in my mind

I’m not sure if you’re sleeping or if you’re gone

Because all I see is peace curling from the corners of your lips

You make what I’m trying to say, contort and twist

Please just take your leave or awake

No amount of wisdom can prepare me for this,

I can’t stand the pain inside of my chest,

The way my heart swells with underlying distress

The way my stomach churns with unspoken regrets

I’m not sure if I know how to steady the shakes

Trembling as I hold you in this frame

I’m not sure why I bought this bouquet

Because you can’t open your eyes to see them

You can’t flare your nostrils and breathe them

You can’t caress their velvet like skin

Or press them against your breast

You can’t place them in a vase to display

So I guess I’ll just leave them atop your grave

Brushing a strand of hair back in place,

On your forehead, I plant a final kiss

And that’s when reality hit

Ice runs in your veins,

Freezing the nerves in your face

As you lay stiff from your eternal state

I don’t know a perfect way to word this,

Taking in a shaky breath,

Releasing out a heavy sigh

As the tears trickle down my cheeks

This isn’t easy,

But I suppose that’s life,

Yet, it’s still so hard to say goodbye
