Goodbye

A poem

Over the years, we shared so many wonderful conversations
Every pain was voiced
Poured out in words during our phone calls
I can't believe it’s all in the past now
Your escapades changed you
You put on masks
I couldn't bring myself to wear one for you
That’s just who I am, honest to the core
No matter how hard the times we went through were
Violent gales tore us away from our destiny
Our paths diverged; nothing binds us anymore
Our souls went their separate ways
Now I must decisively close this chapter
It’s hard, because it’s all written down on the page
I killed you twice in my books, and you laughed
Now I have to kill you in my mind
And, as is often the case with good things
I’m not ready to do it all over again
“It has to be quick,” I tell myself
But how do you kill a friend who was the only one?
Maybe he’ll die soon anyway, so what’s the fuss?
He will live forever in my mind
Trapped as a character, not a real human being
He can move to another reality
Faster than in real life
Because he was made for completely different roles
To run wild and sow chaos
In my mind, inflicting pain along the way
Just like everyone before him
The difference is, this time I saw it being born
Right before my eyes
That’s why I never wanted to let go
Now I have to take stock of it all
And go my own way, saying goodbye for good
