Good Vibes Only

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 3 months ago • 1 min read
Thomas Couture’s "The Romans of the Decadence" (1847)

The discourse of vibes is ubiquitous

The cause of its renaissance seems obscure;

What do these good vibes really mean to us?

Are they, perhaps, disease disguised as cure?

Most normal humans relish a good time

Pleasure and excitement ease our burdens

Surely, a bit of revelry's no crime;

Mad sport pleases the eye that it's blurred in!

But if all that we seek is feeling good

What will we miss? Love is not always bliss

Nor is the truth, so seldom understood;

The ache of beauty is hard to dismiss

Learning is painful, though its fruits are sweet

Justice can be hard to grant those we meet

Ekphrastic
