Good Ships

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

Ivan Aivazovsky, "Due barche a vela nell'aurora" (1868), olio su tela.

Watch the wind showing them the way to you

While the dawn turns the sea into its twin

They boast a charming, patient, valiant crew

Soon enough, your sweet rescue will begin

They all know how fatigue wrinkles your soul

How obtuse, smug cruelty curdles blood

How dim eyes scrutinize the neighbor's bowl

How greed drowns things in a foul, turbid flood

The salt wind will erase all of your cares

Roseate light rehabilitates hearts

They sail seas never touched by a nightmare

They are skilled in gentle, warm, healing arts

See their smiles recognize your waiting eyes

In their language, there is no room for lies

Ekphrastic
