Gold Excellence

Poem for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

When they mock the melanin of your skin

the phenotype of your eyes

falsely proclaiming “Yellow Peril”

blindly painting our communities

like a faceless monolith

no differences between

our vast multitudes of

countries and islands

East and South-East

from the largest continent

Remember our true colors

we are Gold Excellence

gold melanin glimmering in this new country

gold hearts worth much more than our weight

gold bars traded for boat passage and refuge

laborious Midas hands turning wood to railways

seeking golden tickets to lands of opportunity

Reclaim the term of

Asian American, staying golden

not an umbrella term nor model minority

but the gold standard, an alloy of

solidarity, self determination, coalition building

united against racial injustice

towards the golden age of

freedom for all
