Goat Song

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished about a year ago • 1 min read
Francisco de Goya, "Witches' Sabbath or The Great He-Goat," 1820 -1823

He sings in a universal language

Of things our hearts have long known to be true

Poverty, disease and time do ravage

The body, but the spirit sees us through

He sings of the cold patience of darkness

Of the transient vanity of light

Of the exhausting ache for real justice

Of the swift onrush of a bitter fight

Between women and children and brute beasts

And the vain patriarchs who exploit us

We slave to prepare their delicious feasts

While our sad fates, they happily discuss

He assures us that a new time has come

That queens of the earth, we will soon become

Ekphrastic
