GILA MONSTER

by Cleve Taylor

A Gila Monster isn't a monster

And a Komodo Dragon isn't a dragon

But their names excite the imagination.

Our minds soar back to eons past

To dinosaurs, to Tyrannus Rex, to time before man

To worlds that invite our contemplation.

A dragonfly has no dragon blood

But birds share ancient DNA

From the dinosaur age we all know

Flying reptiles flew each day

Our scaly reptilian friends are our living past

A suggestion of life from long ago.

So treat them with care if not affection

For whither go they ----

We go!

Life for everything and everyone

Is precious and always will be

All intertwined and interdependent

So let’s forego polluting our seas
