Ghosts of Kyiv

Borders are broken

Like treaties and trust

As under heavy foot fall

Approach the invaders

Each step dragging a bloody

Heel until the map

Recalls a boot print

A petulant child plots

Finding Democracy dangerous

To all planned oppression

Tank treads turn, scarring the land

Chernobyl is further poisoned

The Black Sea fills with the

Blood of a powerful resistance

Snake island stands defiant

Ghosts of Kyiv fly

Like fabled nightingales

Forests are burned with

The approaching army inside

Lining their pockets with seeds

So that the dead bodies will

Sprout flowers to heal the land

Everything in this world

Has now become a weapon

In the readied hands of children,

Mothers, farmers fighting

Until the moment the

Old bear lay dying

Under their golden trident

A world sympathizes

And rallies to their battle cry

To the Russian warships

To all encroaching soldiers

To the balding ego of a terrified bully

Towards nuclear winter

We fear less than you

    Powerful work

  • I find the imagery in this incredibly subtle, some of your descriptors call up visions of superpowers in single words. This is a beautiful piece and you have a new fan.
