Get thee behind me

Shadow self

Author writing in a field, with apologies to Hendrik van de Sande Bakhuyzen: RGT

I can feel you

Know you are there

Behind me

Though you are a devil at hiding

For sure you care not how long

It takes

Raking over the coals of our past

So quick to judge

So slow

To forgive

The agony of all our

Painful yesterdays

Every breath I take I fear you

Long to escape you but know that

I cannot deny

The realisation that I am not

The different person I claim to be

At one with you

Spawn of Satan

Reviled person of yesteryear

You are still here behind me

Following on

Waiting for the moment to pounce

To strangle me with the realisation

That you and I are but one

Have been

All along

From the moment I put you there

In the dusty distance of time

Sought to destroy you

Eradicate you from my life

I knew that I could not

All my desire to open my heart

Belied the tell-tale murderer of

All that is good

Between us

Never a moment to celebrate

What wonderful things we may have done

Our tiny moments of blissful giving

All gone

All hope cast aside

Too much energy spent

Delaying dread day

That you would catch up with me

When I should glance behind

And see you for what you truly are

You as me

Me as you

The man

The monster

Brethren of Beelzebub

Yet is it fair

That you should cast me in

Your own pitiful mould

Our soul sacrificed to a past

That cannot be cleansed of ill

Only discovered

Revealed

As I slow the pace

Allow you to show your face

My glance

A suspenseful moment of hesitation

Looking over my shoulder

To see you standing there

Next to me

Looking at me with

Knowing eye

As you overtake

My slowing self

Taking a deep breath

I will strike you down

Once for all

Only to see you rise again

Resume the pursuit

Unto our

Dying

Day
