a growling rises from a silent place

where once the sun danced on the lakes

now grumbling, frozen, still and quiet

"fall's" David, battling goliath

rumbling underneath our feet

the cracking where the shoreline meets

the frosted blades that line the beach

as winter's power, is released

the singing of the verglas, glides

upon the wind, thickening the ice

that booms and pops, like in July

as fireworks light up the sky

cryoseisms, quake the ground

filling the nighttime air with sound

gentle trembles, rattle and shake

as water freezes making frost quakes

the subtle sounds that nature makes

as winter comes to take her place
