Frost in Florida

A crystalline sonnet

By Barb DukemanPublished 2 years ago • 1 min read
A first frost in Florida happens maybe once a year

The change of seasons happens in the north

In Florida the climate stays the same-

The different forms of warm and hot come forth

Each giving heat a new and novel name.

The t-shirt is the uniform we wear,

Perhaps a tank or sleeveless cotton top.

But closed-toe shoes? We rarely own a pair

Because our toasty temps can never drop.

But “never” sometimes gives us time to think

As cold fronts make it down from Canada

We scramble for long sleeves, degrees do shrink,

And frost begins to graze dear Florida.

It’s hard to see as crystals start to form

We seek our coats and socks to keep us warm.
