Front Door

A Poem about Reaching Out

If you opened your front door

and found me standing outside,

my hand raised as if to knock,

what would you do?

Would you smile politely,

make small talk as you

never make eye contact and

tell me you had somewhere else to be?

Would you get angry,

ask me to leave right then

slam the door shut, and

leave me on the doorstep?

Would you pretend not to see me

walk by me as if I wasn’t there

and let me believe that

indeed there were no words to say?

Or, would you, like in my dreams

hug me and tell me

that this was what you had hoped for

but never had the courage for?
